The Art Museum of South Texas offers two outreach programs to our community including a secondary touring program for art students and teachers in CCISD as well as a program targeting rural school districts within a 75-mile radius of the Museum.
All middle school students as well as Art I high school students in CCISD receive a pre-visit by the Museum's Outreach Coordinator for a one-hour preparatory visit that includes a slideshow and hands-on lesson. Connections are made to classroom curriculum as students get a preview of their Museum tour. At the Museum, each art class receives a guided tour by trained docents and take part in in-depth discussions about the art, artists and the historical and social significance of the art that they see.
Each year, the Museum sees students from 12 to 15 rural school districts in its ArtReach program. The Outreach Coordinator presents artworks from the Museum’s collection and thematically connects the art with classroom curriculum. The primary goals are: to illustrate the importance of art appreciation; to prepare students and teachers who are touring the exhibits to have a meaningful experience; use multi-media technologies to teach and expand upon TEKS-integrated curriculum and student exhibits; facilitate Museum visits by rural schools; act as a regional resource for teachers, and enrich the cultural connections of South Texas by exposing populations to the Museum’s collections which emphasizes regional artists.
Our outreach programs are well-established and are components of AMST’s long-term efforts to make art accessible to both rural and urban populations throughout South Texas.
