CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Opening to the public on January 20th, the Art Museum of South Texas will host Karin Broker my small circus.
Broker’s art in drawings and sculpture immediately strike the viewer with the utter force of the work. With both confident and controlled forms and lines the subtlety of their strength is a marvel. The work titled, Interior #1, 1989 drawn on a large-scale Formica surface demonstrates Broker’s propensity to select materials supportive in how the art presents its subject matter. A girl gazing in the glowing light of a small television screen, the lights, and darks of Broker’s drawing casting directed light back upon the sitter. This work and a dozen others in both two and in three dimensions, reveal the complexities of the artist’s interior thought and outward expression, playing with our perceptions.
Born in Pennsylvania, Broker received a BFA from the University of Iowa and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She studied printmaking under Stanley W. Hayter at the Atelier 17 in Paris. She was professor of printmaking and drawing at Rice University from 1980-2021. She was the 1994 Texas Artist of the Year and was awarded two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her artwork is in public collections nationwide including Brooklyn Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and now with a new addition, the Art Museum of South Texas has most recently acquired Shotgun Girl, 2021, with the support of the Windgate Foundation.
The sculpture and drawing exhibition will open to Museum members January 19, at 5:30pm. The following day, at 12pm, the Museum will host a Lunch Amongst the Masters, followed at 1pm, with an artist discussion where visitors will have the opportunity to listen to, and discuss Broker’s thoughts, and approaches to creating.
This exhibition will be on view at The Art Museum of South Texas from January 20th, 2023 through Easter Sunday, April 9th, 2023.
About the McClain Gallery
Since 1980, Robert and Cynthia Cage McClain have focused on the exhibition and the acquisition of museum quality modern and contemporary art. McClain Gallery’s program represents important twentieth-century figures while continuing to commit to younger generations of artists, which includes the primary representation of many Texas-based artists. The gallery has mounted monographic exhibitions, as well as published scholarly catalogs for Peter Halley, Donald Baechler, Andy Warhol, Robert Motherwell, Rosa Loy, The Bruce High Quality Foundation, Julian Schnabel, Bo Joseph, and Pablo Picasso. Our exhibition program is augmented by surveys and group shows that investigate current themes in contemporary art within historic contexts.
