Art Museum of South Texas
This exhibition was organized by the Albright-Knox Art Museum and was curated by Linda Cathcart. American Paintings of the 1970s featured fifty works by fifty artists, surveying the diverse painting styles and artistic trends of the 1970s when it was first on view in Buffalo, New York. After it closed in Buffalo, the exhibition traveled to the Newport Harbor Art Museum in Newport Beach, California; the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi; the Oakland Museum; and the Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
The travelling exhibition included works by thirty to forty living American artists who have made major contributions to American art during this decade. Artists represented included such long-time major contributors as Lee Krasner, Roy Lichtenstein, Agnes Margin, Frank Stella, Jasper Johns, and Andy Warhol. In addition, many younger artists who emerged in the 1970’s were included such as Susan Rothenberg, Frances Barch, Joel Shapiro and Michael Tetherow.
