The South Texas Art League has been an integral part of the history of the Art Museum of South Texas since the 1940s. However, STAL began in the mid-nineteen thirties by art faculty at Texas A&I Kingsville, now TAMU-Kingsville. Early on, Art League members were involved in operating the young museum located in Corpus Christi’s South Bluff Park. The Art League and many other vital local art groups make up the Art Center of Corpus Christi on Shoreline Boulevard. The 2006 Art League competition continued an annual tradition in which members competed for a place in a fall exhibition at the Art Museum of South Texas.
A note from this year’s juror, Cassie White, “I was drawn to how many works attend to the vibrant animacy of our natural world through subject matter, material, and process. I was particularly impressed by playful experimentation with materials, skillful use of luminosity, lively palettes, and the invitation to experience aspects of the everyday in refreshing ways. The array of paintings, works on paper, mixed media, photographs, and sculptures demonstrate a rich variety of technical approaches and thoughtful visual contemplations which evoke distinct qualities of life in South Texas. To members of the South Texas Art League: Thank you for generously sharing your talent and creativity for others to enjoy.”
Congratulations and thank you to all of the artists that submitted work. More information about the South Texas Art League can be found at the exhibition’s beginning or contact current president, Les Glaze at 361-877-4076.
